主角们卡尔和奈丽在巴顿森林练剑，比试中卡尔打败了奈丽，此时卡尔的父亲荻福出现，责怪卡尔不该练剑。荻福回树屋时遇到了追问水晶下落不休的妖精，为此大打出手；而奈丽为劝说荻福让卡尔练剑而追上来，使出绝招，赶跑妖精，但是荻福已深受重伤。奈丽来不及通知卡尔，急忙赶往巴顿村找父亲太勒，楼上可找到雨露匕首，先凑合着用吧。村口遇到卡尔，两人一起赶到巴顿森林树屋。太勒要两人找玉石花和百灵草制药。二人在森林深处找到硫磺，驱走小蛇两条，找齐两种药材。可是荻福伤势过于严重，太勒又要两人去找大贤者艾伯特求救。二人便由巴顿村穿过迷幻森林去安路尼神殿找贤者
游戏玩法：
在游戏中，敌我双方的战斗会以浮动回合制进行，在战斗中，每个角色都有Time Bar（时间条），战斗时会从不同的速度上升，首先攒满的人便可以选择行动，当指令完成后，时间条便会重置零位置，等待时间条攒满才能进行下一次行动。如此类推，直到战斗结束为止。而对应的角色速度系统，就是指角色的时间条恢复率（TP）的高低。如果角色的TP为20时，即代表这个角色的恢复率每秒是20%。在正常的情况下，所有角色的TP均会在20%---50%之间，这决定了行动的速度。魔法系统可以说是本作的主人公。在魔法系统中使用“魔法陷阱”后不会即时发生效能，但只要在一定时间内有角色触动，“魔法陷阱”就会即可发生反应在触动的角色上

更平等的魔法风云会
《苍穹霸主》简单地来说，就是《魔法风云会》（Magic the Gathering）遇上了《魔法门之英雄无敌》（Heroes of Might and Magic）。玩者在游戏中将可扮演一位操纵着天地灵气（Ether）的巫师之王，召唤出各种生物或施展法术与其它巫师作战。
这些法术的来源是四种不同派系的法术符文（Rune），包括黑色的机械牌组、绿色的自然牌组、蓝色的天使牌组以及红色的火焰牌组，各种牌组的优点与胜场皆不相同，总数高达三百种以上。
红色牌组：多半是直接攻击敌方巫师与大量增加灵气的法术。黑色牌组：都是些嗜血的狂暴机械，攻击力强、但往往伴随着负面作用。绿色牌组：这组强调自然力的法术派系擅长召唤出大量的生物。蓝色牌组：具备各种牌组中最多量的辅助法术，光是靠清场及心灵震爆等辅助法术就能给敌人造成致命的伤害。
但是和《魔法风云会》与《游戏王》不同的是，玩者无须不停地自荷包中掏出银两，购买一包又一包的随机数纸牌组合，玩者在《苍穹霸主》里，只要符合其资源限制，您大可尽情地取用所有类型的牌组法术，决胜的重点在于您是否能组合出一套具备强力连续技（combo）的牌堆。
《苍穹霸主》提供决斗与剧情战役两种单人游戏模式，前者就是纯粹的牌组对战，您可和计算机对手来一场直接了当的胜负，后者则包含了两个敌对阵营间所交叠编织的战争史诗。
剧情战役的游戏方式和《英雄无敌》十分地类似，玩者将可拥有一座城堡作为根据地，而战役地图上则分布着各种怪物、资源或非玩者人物，可与玩者所钦点的英雄人物作战或互动。随着玩者的资源与经验等级的增加，玩者所操控的英雄人物将可选择更多样的法术、技能或甚至在身上装备特殊的神器，让您感受到人物成长的乐趣与更多变化的对战方式。
