The Senkaku Islands or Diaoyutai Islands are a group of disputed, uninhabited islands currently administered by Japan, but claimed by the People's Republic of China and the Republic of China. They are also known as the Pinnacle Islands, a name given by British navigators, which is also the probable source for the Japanese name. The Chinese name for the island group (Diaoyu) and the Japanese name for the main island (Uotsuri) both literally mean "Angling". Their status has emerged as a major issue in foreign relations between China and Japan and, moreover, the relations between the PRC and the ROC are also complicating the situation.
